In your opinion, what is the smartest and quickest way to progress salary wise?
Take everything I say with a grain of salt, given I am early in my career. However based off what I've read, listened and spoke to people, here are some things to consider.
1. Ensure you're working in a role that stretches you because the more you learn, the more you'll be able to leverage your experience to gaining more experience.
2. Specialise in a specific domain. For example, if you know that you want to work as a software engineer, think about the specific domain you would like to work in and programming language you want to specialise in. E.g Java developer working in fintech. It gives you the extra ability to leverage your experience for a higher salary, since you've got greater domain experience.
3. Switching jobs every couple of years. The rate at which your salary grows tends to be lower than if you were to get another job at another company at current market salary.
4. Working a job where your performance is directly related to your compensation e.g companies that give performance based bonuses.
5. Lastly and most obvious, working in high paying industries. Industries like Finance and Investment Banking tend to pay the highest on average.
